Code of Ethics
Preamble
Whether an owner, exhibitor, or breeder, the Korean Jindo Dog enthusiast is often confronted with decisions and courses of action which can impact the continued improvement and preservation of the Korean Jindo Dog breed and the well-being of his or her individual dogs. All too often, because of inexperience or lack of forethought, the decisions made and the course of action pursued are unfortunate ones, with lasting detrimental effects.
With these guidelines, which represent a distillation of the personal codes of conduct of its members, the Korean Jindo Dog Association of America is setting forth acceptable practices and a number of precautions, and is directing them to any and all involved with our breed with the intent that the pitfalls be avoided and the pleasures enhanced.
The Korean Jindo Dog Association of America asserts that its membership has the obligation to the Korean Jindo Dog breed to preserve the historical characteristics and magnificence of the breed without exploiting it, and further asserts that its membership owes an obligation to the Club to uphold the high ideals set forth for all dog club organizations by the American Kennel Club. In addition, it is asserted by the Club that its membership owes an obligation to future members and others interested in the Korean Jindo Dog breed, to supply factual information without misrepresentation.
1. Each club member, as a representative of the breed, should strive to provide factual information to interested parties which represents the breed in actuality, highlighting both good and bad characteristics.
2. Each owner should maintain good sanitation, health care, and provide adequate mental and physical stimulation as well as proper socialization and training for their dogs. Further, owners will always respect their dog and the breed by placing the individual dogs needs and best interests above any competition goals or personal prestige.
3. Every owner should prioritize the importance of being a good "dog neighbor". Every Korean Jindo Dog becomes the "real representative of the breed" if involved in one misdeed.
4. Each breeder or person placing a dog should attempt to accurately evaluate each dog as an appropriate match to the prospective purchaser or adopter.
5. Each breeder or person placing a dog should offer assistance to the new owner with respect to the care and feeding of his or her dog, pointing out the needed routine health care, and stressing the requirement for correct early socialization and training.
6. All transactions involving breeding, or the sales or placement of dogs or bitches of any age should be evidenced by contracts in writing.
7. All breeders shall participate in a program of officially screening all dogs and bitches for hip, eye, patella, cardiac, and thyroid issues before breeding is considered.
8. Dogs and bitches will only be bred where it is conscientiously felt that such breeding will result in preservation of the breed, and before entering into a breeding agreement or doing any breeding will carefully analyze the conformation and pedigrees of the prospective sire and dam for compatibility.
9. The owners of such bitch and dog in each breeding shall supply each other with accurate and complete information on their dog or bitch with respect to all health issues present in the dog or known in the lineage including hip dysplasia, eye issues, thyroid issues, patella grades, and any other genetic fault, inherited disease, or undesirable characteristic of which you are aware and have reason to believe could occur.
10. Puppies shall be sold on a written agreement and it shall stipulate the breeder’s willingness to replace a puppy that has been sold, or to refund all or a portion of the purchase price, if the puppy proves to have a structural defect that significantly limits its quality of life. It should be considered acceptable to limit the time for such replacement or refund by written agreement and to provide for confirmation of any structural defect by the breeder's veterinarian.
